Wines that Pair with Scary Movies

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year. The leaves change colour and there’s always lots to see and do. From hiking trails and pumpkin picking to hosting a chili night with friends, picnics in the park, and visits to the apple orchard. People dress up in costumes, decorate their homes and some brave souls even face their fears inside the walls of a haunted house. It’s no surprise that when it comes to picking a movie for family night, the horror genre is a popular choice for many. Because it wouldn’t be Halloween without a little spookiness to get us into the spirit of the season!

Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Psycho (1960), The Exorcist (1973), and The Birds (1963) – these are some of the best classic horror films of all time. If you’re a fan of the classics, you’ll also love our EN PRIMEUR WINERY SERIES: Italy Super Tuscan. This assertive, full-bodied wine has aromatics of fresh raspberries and subtle hints of vanilla and earth. With firm tannins and a concentrated palate of blackberries and black pepper, this old-world wine pairs fantastically with any horror classic. But before you press play, be sure to enjoy a glass with a tender cut of pork or succulent slow-cooked beef.

For a modern twist on family fright night, there’s The Sixth Sense (1999), Blair Witch Project (1999), The Ring (2002), Paranormal Activity (2007), and Get Out (2017). Our EN PRIMEUR WINERY SERIES: Chile Malbec is the perfect new world pairing for your modern movie night in. With a brilliant bouquet of dark fruits and notes of oak, vanilla and spices, this full-bodied wine has strong plum and berry flavours balanced by moderate tannins on the palate. It’s best enjoyed with pasta, spicy sausage or juicy BBQ chicken. For dessert, we recommend curling up on the couch with a sweet treat and one of these heart-racing horror flicks.

Selecting a scary movie is like selecting a fine wine – there are so many styles and varieties to choose from! Whether you want a wine that’s old-world classic or new world modern, you can have lots of fun pairing a glass with your favourite scary movie. A quick tip when planning your next spooky-themed night – one that’s filled with delicious food, wine and film – make sure you have a blanket nearby. Just in case you need a good place to hide!
