Pinot Noir
The Grape
Pinot Noir is a red wine grape originally from the Burgundy region in East-Central France. The word “pinot” means pine cone and “noir” means black in French. Historians believe this variety got its name because its small clusters of dark grapes are shaped like a pine cones. Pinot Noir can be difficult to grow because it is sensitive to wind and frost. However, as one of the world’s most popular varieties, it is now grown in cooler wine regions throughout the old and new worlds.
The Wines
The style of wine made from Pinot Noir greatly depends on where the grapes are grown and how the wine maker chooses to make it. Typically Pinot Noir wine tends to be lighter in colour than other red wines and characterized by higher acid levels and low tannins. The flavours and aromas of these wines often include black cherry, red berries, currants and roses, with new world Pinots having more fruit forward characteristics than old world versions.
The Occasions
Pinot Noir is an elegant wine to serve to close friends at an intimate evening gathering. Its smooth flavours and soft tannins will compliment a light meal of Spanish style tapas or a tray of mixed hors d’oeuvres. Pair it with lightly grilled meats or semi-soft cheeses like Edam and Gouda – and impress your guests!
