Riesling
The Grape
Often mispronounced, Riesling wine has a colourful German heritage. Originating in the Rhine region of Germany, this highly aromatic wine has been regarded as the greatest white wine grape for hundreds of years. Late harvest dessert wines made from Riesling grapes are produced by letting the grapes hang on the vines well past normal picking time.
The Wines
Riesling is quite unlike any other white wine. It can have great depth and both delicate and intense refreshing flavours. High in natural fruity acidity, almost to the level of a tart lemonade, the primary fruit aromas in a Riesling are nectarine, apricot, pear, honey and apple. Because of Riesling’s structure, it has no need for the enhancements sometimes found in other white wines like oak, malolactic fermentation or high alcohol.
The Occasions
If you’re thinking ethnic cuisine, then Riesling is definitely the best choice. Have a couple of bottles ready when you plan to cook up a few of your favourite Indian dishes or if you just want to feast on take-out from your local Asian restaurant.
Different types of winemaking practices can affect the outcome of your wine. The chart below is a guideline for how we describe the profiles of our finished wines. Refer to tasting notes for each wine’s profile.
