Pinot Grigio

The Grape

Although many believe that Pinot Grigio originated in Italy, it was actually born, like most popular grapes of the world, in France where it is known as Pinot Gris. Now, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris can be found in most wine regions around the world. Grigio means grey in Italian because this wine produces a grayish-blue fruit and is typically darker in comparison to grapes used to produce other white wine varieties.

The Wines

While Pinot Grigio is seemingly everybody’s default for a glass of dry white wine, it is actually an intricate grape with a variety of styles. Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are interchangeable, but Pinot Gris on the label will often imply a fruity French style while Pinot Grigio suggests a drier Italian style. Most Italian Pinot Grigios are light-bodied and neutral, with notes of citrus, pear and mineral flavours, and a medium acidity. Pinot Gris offers a much rounder body, with fruitier back notes of apple, pear and peach.

The Occasions

Pinot Grigio is a zesty white wine that is refreshing on a hot summer’s day. It’s the perfect wine to serve at an outdoor celebration or a mid-day barbeque. A Pinot Grigio compliments everybody’s palate, and can be served throughout the year on almost any occasion.
